Vocabulary
Sometimes teachers forget that education speak can sound like a foreign language. Here are some definitions for terms you may hear at school, from teachers, or your student that can be confusing:
Accommodations – Every student has his or her own needs. As teachers, we try to provide material that is best for each student.
Flex Time – Usually once a week on Wednesdays, students in the Galaxy Pod meet to have a literacy lesson and celebration meeting to recognize various students. When we have pod meeting, the three pod classes “flex”. This makes the three classes about 10-15 minutes shorter, but prevents students from missing a large chunk of one class.
iFlight – Time set aside for students who have a C- or better in every class to participate in a fun activity, while students with a D or lower work with teachers to better understand and complete assignments.
Interdisciplinary – Teachers from different subjects work together to connect their topics.
Intervention – Any action taken to see improvement in a student’s behavior or grades.
Literacy – Literacy is the ability to read and write at an appropriate level. We give literacy lessons each week to teach tools and strategies students can use. We try to use these tools in all our classes.
Pod – A pod is a team of three teachers that share the same students. It is made up of a social studies teacher, science teacher, and language arts teacher.
Prep Period – Most teachers have one period where they prepare lessons, discuss interventions, and grade assignments. At times teachers may seek to meet with parents during their prep period if possible.
T.A. (Teacher Advisory) – A class where students work with a teacher to check on grades and learn about becoming better students; This class usually meets on Mondays and Thursdays for 30 minutes.
